Emanuel Navarrete faces weight decision after Liam Wilson clashDAZN

Emanuel Navarrete may return to featherweight after his world title fight at junior lightweight this weekend.

The Mexican will take on Liam Wilson for the vacant WBO strap on Friday, a belt made available after Shakur Stevenson failed to make weight in his last clash at 130lbs before moving up to lightweight,

However, Navarrete told BoxingScene.com that he is far from certain to remain in the current division even if he has success in winning the belt.

“I’m still undecided on what we’re going to do after this fight,” Navarrete said.

“Before my last fight, we decided that if I can’t get a unification at featherweight that we would look at winning a world title at 130.

“This opportunity presented itself so we are taking it but I also [stressed] that I wanted to keep my featherweight title and see what happens in this fight.”

Navarrete has yet to vacate his WBO featherweight title, which he has defended three times after defeating Ruben Villa in October 2020.

He has been denied the chance to unify the division, and that has led to him considering a move at a fresh weight, but should he win at the weekend he will have 10 days to decide which weight to operate at, and defeat could also see him stripped of his current championship.

“After this fight, we will see how I feel,” added Navarrete.

“Right now, with the hard work we’ve put in, making 130 won’t be a problem and I feel like I can still make 126. Let’s see how things go in this fight.

"God willing we get the win and become WBO [130-pound] champion, then we will decide whether to stay and defend that title or give it up and return to 126 where I am still the champion.”
