Daniel Jacobs has retired from boxing following a successful career that saw him overcome cancer to become world middleweight champion.
Jacobs made the announcement on his Instagram page and the decision comes just a week after he lost on points to Shane Mosley Jr.
Turning professional on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather's epic bout against Ricky Hatton back in 2007, Jacobs, nicknamed ‘Golden Child’ was seen as a key part of Oscar De La Hoya’s promising stable.
A defeat to Dmitry Pirog in 2010 slightly derailed Jacobs’ career, but his biggest fight would come outside the ring as he battled against osteosarcoma.
Resuming his career, Jacobs would eventually become a two-time world champion as well as performing well in close losses to elite pound-for-pound fighters Gennadiy Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez.
In recent years, Jacobs endured a downturn in form, and he was beaten in a huge upset in 2022 when fighting in London against John Ryder.
This month’s setback against Mosley Jt was the fifth defeat of his career and it’ll also be the last as Jacobs walks away with his head held high and the owner of very impressive 37-5 record that includes multiple world title bouts.
"Through the ups and downs inside & out of the ring, I have manage to become 2 x world champion and I’m able to say I’m the first cancer survivor to be a boxing world champion the biggest accomplishment I ever could achieve," wrote Jacobs on social media.
"Being able to inspire others with my story has always made me feel like my life meant more than just fighting inside the ring. A true miracle man. Job well done."
