If you thought your family was a little odd, how about trying this on for size. The late boxing trainer Gary Russell, who was based out of Washington DC had five sons. It is hard to know why, but he named each of his sons after himself.
As they grew up, each son followed his father into boxing, giving birth to the appropriately named Team Gary Russell.
Before his passing Russell Snr. coached each of his sons and they all did very well. In fact, most of them are still performing at very high levels.
Let's take a quick look at brothers Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary and Gary...
1. Gary Russell Jr.
Known as "Mr" Gary Russell Jr. is the most decorated of the brothers. A former WBC World Featherweight Champion, he dominated the division for several years with his extraordinary speed and technical skills.
Russell Jr. held the featherweight title from 2015 to 2022, becoming one of the longest-reigning champions in the division's history. Despite a loss to Mark Magsayo in 2022, he remains an iconic figure in boxing.
At the start of his career, he was tipped for an Olympic medal, but sadly it did not come to pass as he reportedly lost consciousness in his room at the athlete’s village and missed weigh-in. His Olympic failure did not stop him from being named as Prospect of the Year in 2011 by both The Ring and Sports Illustrated.
2. Gary Antonio Russell
Antonio, the second brother, has built a strong career as a bantamweight. Known for his quick combinations and ring intelligence, he has maintained an impressive professional record.
With aspirations of capturing a world title, Antonio is seen as a rising star and a reflection of the disciplined training instilled by their father. Although he has never fought for a world title, he has come close.
His WBA bantamweight title eliminator bout in 2021 against Emmanuel Rodríguez ended in a no decision after just 16 seconds after Rodriguez sustained a cut to his nose following an accidental clash of heads. He lost the rematch in 2022 with scores of 100–90, 99–91 and 99–93. To show their father had a sense of humour, this Gary is nicknamed ‘Another’.
3. Gary Antuanne Russell
Dubbed 'The Last', Gary Antuanne Russell is making his mark as a super lightweight. A former Olympian who competed in the 2016 Rio Games, Antuanne is known for his aggressive style and knockout power.
With an undefeated record up until his 18th fight, Gary Antuanne finally suffered a professional defeat in June 2024 when he was on the wrong side of a split decision against Alberto Puello in Las Vegas.
Despite the loss he is quickly climbing the ranks and is widely regarded as a future world champion. With Richardson Hitchin's challenging for the IBF super lightweight title on Saturday it is worth noting that it was Gary Antuanne Russell who defeated Hitchins at the Olympics when they were both amateurs.

4. Gary Allan Russell
The least known among the boxing siblings, Gary Allan III focuses more on the managerial and promotional aspects of the family's legacy.
Though not as prominent in the ring, he plays a crucial role in supporting his brothers' careers and maintaining the Team Gary Russell brand.
5. Gary Isaiah Russell
Isaiah is one of the youngest and still in the early stages of his career. Training under the family’s Connect Boxing Club, he shows promise and is expected to follow in the footsteps of his accomplished brothers.
Isaiah represents the next generation of Team Gary Russell and carries the family's storied name forward.
