Liam Paro is an Australian professional boxer who hails from Mackay in Queensland. At 28 years old, he boasts a record of 25 wins from 25 fights, 15 of them by knockout. It's an impressive record, and it could be about to get better as he prepares for his maiden defence of the IBF super lightweight title that he won little more than five months ago. Regarded as a future star in his native Australia, Paro is set to do battle with Richardson Hitchins in Puerto Rico on Saturday, live on DAZN.

Let's take a quick look at Paro - where did he come from, where is he going, and how is he going to get there?

1. From Mackay to the world stage

Liam Paro’s boxing journey started in Mackay, a small city in Queensland, Australia. Despite limited access to elite training facilities early on, his passion for boxing was evident from a young age. While initially it was Rugby League that took his fancy, there was no turning back when the boxing bug bit at the age of 13. He moved to Brisbane to pursue his career and joined the Team Stretton Boxing stable, which laid the foundation for his rise in the sport.

2. A perfect professional record

Paro’s undefeated streak is no small feat, with 25 wins in 25 fights. His ability to adapt in the ring has been key, with 15 of those victories coming via knockout. His precision and defensive skill have made him one of Australia’s most exciting prospects in recent years. His formative years in Brisbane saw him train alongside future world champion Jeff Horn, sparring with him as he prepared for his famous win over legendary Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao.

3. A preponderance of Puerto Ricans

For some reason, Puerto Rican fighters feature prominently in Paro's rise to the top. His international debut in Tampa was against the previously undefeated Yomar Álamo, while his title-winning bout was against Subriel Matias. Having beaten Matias by unanimous decision in June 2024, he is now set to defend his belt in San Juan, the capital city of Puerto Rico.

4. Riveting rivalry

Paro has shared a healthy rivalry with other super lightweight talents, notably Regis Prograis and Josh Taylor. His ambition to unify the division reflects his desire to cement his legacy as one of the greats in the sport.

5. More than just boxing

Away from the ring, Liam Paro is known for his humility and connection to his roots. He frequently returns to Mackay to inspire young athletes and is an advocate for promoting boxing at grassroots level in Australia. His focus on giving back to the community underscores his character beyond his fighting prowess.
