Roger Mayweather, the uncle and former trainer of undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr., has died, a member of Floyd's camp confirmed with TMZ Sports. He was 58. The cause of his death is unknown at this time.
Although Roger Mayweather had success as a boxer himself as a two-weight world champion (super featherweight and junior welterweight), who fought the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez, Pernell Whitaker and Vinny Pazienza to name a few, working his nephew's corner and training Floyd into superstar status are what he'll be remembered for most.
"My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring," said Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a press release. "Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing. Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years and now he can finally rest in peace. Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, our whole family, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us."
Back in August, Jeff Mayweather spoke about Roger's condition.
"He's kind of hanging in there," Jeff told EsNews. "It's kind of like one of those sad boxing stories that he gave his life to boxing."
Roger had 72 professional fights from July 1981-May 1999, compiling a record of 59-13, including 35 knockouts.
In the past, Mayweather Jr. has also spoken about his uncle/trainer's plight following boxing.
"My uncle Roger Mayweather has lost a lot of memory from the sport of boxing," Floyd said, as reported by TMZ Sports. "He's only in his 50s, but it seems like he's an old man in his 80s."
The news of Roger's passing Tuesday comes a week after Mayweather Jr.'s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his three children, Josie Harris, died last Tuesday at the age of 40.
Mayweather remembered and tributed Harris by posting several images on his Instagram account.
