Frank Bruno finally became world champion at the fourth time of asking when he defeated Oliver McCall in 1995, but who was the smartest fighter the British man faced?
Bruno’s superb rise in the 1980s saw him challenge Tim Witherspoon and Mike Tyson for heavyweight glory.
Despite being unsuccessful, Bruno pushed on and after falling to Lennox Lewis in 1993, it appeared that his world title dream was over.
That all changed two years later when defeating McCall before losing the belt to Tyson in 1996, then walking away from the sport.
Bruno, who shared the ring with many great operators, has paid tribute to Witherspoon.
“Witherspoon sparred with some great legends of boxing like Muhammed Ali and Larry Holmes, and this gave him a wealth of experience,” said Bruno when speaking to The Ring in 2017
“He would have to be the smartest fighter I fought.”
