Tyson Fury’s co-promoter believes it would be an error for Anthony Joshua to go straight into a rematch with new IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Usyk defeated Joshua at the weekend in an upset victory, and Joshua intends to set up a rematch in 2022 in an attempt to win back his three belts for the second time in his career.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Warren thinks that a fight with Fury - the current WBC champion - would be the most profitable choice, and went as far as saying Joshua could not win a rematch with Usyk.
"He shouldn’t go anywhere near Usyk — he will never beat him. In terms of fighting Tyson Fury, it can happen. Joshua losing has taken away the belts and he is damaged goods now. But people would still buy into that fight. It can happen in the UK," Warren said to The Daily Mail.
“But he shouldn’t have a rematch with Usyk. I wouldn’t even think about it if I was him.”
Warren predicted Fury would have won comfortably had the pair met last weekend, saying: “I thought Joshua was poor. Take nothing away from Usyk, who was brilliant, but Joshua was poor. He didn’t fancy it at all. What was he even doing on the ring walk? He was shaking hands with people in the crowd. You’re meant to be on a mission. When he was in the ring he looked gun shy.
“Tyson Fury would have destroyed him inside three or four rounds. Tyson has great footwork, a great chin and his hands are as fast as Usyk’s and he is bigger – he would have destroyed Joshua.”
Fury next fights on October 9 in a trilogy rematch with Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas. After any rematch with Usyk and Joshua is resolved, that could set up the chance of a fight to crown an undisputed heavyweight champion.
