Frank Warren discussed the options for Zhilei Zhang after his impressive win over Joe Joyce on Saturday night.
The pair met for their rematch at Wembley Arena to settle their rivalry after their first fight in April.
The Chinese fighter won the WBO Interim championship in that first fight as he pulled off an upset stoppage victory.
Better things were expected from the 38-year-old heavyweight in the second fight, but this time Zhang was even more dominant, sending Joyce to the canvas with a heavy right-hander in the third round, and calling for a clash with Tyson Fury in the aftermath.
Zhang’s mandatory opponent would currently be Oleksandr Usyk, and there is a chance he could be in line for a shot over the coming months.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the fight, Warren was disappointed on Joyce’s behalf.
He said: “It’s very disappointing. The first couple of rounds he got it right, he was moving to the guy’s left, and then it went toe-to-toe and he got caught with an extremely good punch, and that was that.
“If he could have continued to do what he’d done in the first couple of rounds and got to the fifth round, it would have been interesting to see where it went, but he got caught with a really good shot and that was it.”
Turning to Zhang, he anticipated a mandatory title shot for the fighter in 2024: “He’s got a promotional deal with us, he’s in a position where he’s the WBO interim champion where he’s the mandatory challenger for their title and next year, probably the WBO will order a mandatory.”
