'A good night for British boxing!' - Galal Yafai plays down hometown advantage before Sunny Edwards bout

'A good night for British boxing!' - Galal Yafai plays down hometown advantage before Sunny Edwards boutMark Robinson / Matchroom Boxing
The two will contest an encounter in the West Midlands, where one fighter cut his teeth before he turned professional.

Galal Yafai has played down the suggestion of hometown advantage when he takes to the ring for his anticipated bout with Sunny Edwards next month in Birmingham.

The former Olympian will face off with his rival at BP Pulse Live, marking just the second time he has fought in the city since turning professional in 2022.

Yafai has fought mostly across the United States across his eight-bout career, while Edwards has also contested four of his last six fights overseas.

But ahead of November's bout, Yafai has suggested that while it is an honour to return to the West Midlands, he does not feel as if it will give him an advantage.

"I don't think so," he exclusively told DAZN. "It's still not too far from where Sunny is from. He's British and a relatively big name.

"It will be a good night for the winner, but it will be a good night for British boxing too."

Yafai still acknowledged that he was looking forward to being back on home turf, but stressed that as long as he is in the ring, he is ready to go wherever.

"I've fought a lot in the States, so it’ll be nice to get back and fight in my home city which I’ve got a great history with," he added.

"But I don’t mind where I fight. As long as I’m fighting, I’m happy."

Yafai arrives on the back of a victory over Sergio Oliva in Sheffield, while Edwards previously defeated Adrian Curiel in Phoenix, Arizona.
