The Australian fights this weekend.

George Kambosos Jr. believes Maxi Hughes was not good enough to motivate him in his most recent fight.

The pair of them clashed back in July, and former world champion Kambosos won via a majority decision, though plenty of people argued about the fairness of the scorecards.

The Australian was far from his best and he was nowhere near the calibre of the fighter that defeated Teofimo Lopez Jr. back in 2021.

Speaking to BoxingScene, Kambosos argued that higher-profile opponents, like Lopez and Devin Haney, made it easier to raise his game.

“When you've been with 10-out-of-10 Victoria's Secret models and then you get the 2-out-of-10, a guy [like Hughes, who] is supposed to be a bump in the road, you sometimes don't have that supreme motivation,” Kambosos told BoxingScene.com.

“I had to adapt a lot in the fight. He was at his best, and I was at my worst.”

Kambosos’ next fight comes this Saturday, against Vasily Lomachenko for the vacant IBF lightweight strap (live on ESPN+ in the US).
