Gervonta Davis wanted to fight three times in 2019. Not many top-level fighters get to do that, but Davis is going to accomplish the feat.
He'll compete at lightweight for the first time on Saturday (Dec. 28), when he squares off with Yuriorkis Gamboa for the vacant WBA (regular) lightweight title at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
Davis (22-0, 21 KOs) started off the year with a bang, knocking out late replacement Hugo Ruiz in February. Then, in front of a raucous crowd of nearly 15,000 people at the Royal Farms Arena in his hometown of Baltimore, Davis wrecked Ricardo Nunez inside of two rounds to retain the WBA (super) super featherweight championship and run his KO streak to 13.
The 25-year-old proceeded to call out IBF titlist Tevin Farmer for a unification bout. But negotiations didn't go far, and Davis decided to venture up to 135 pounds and attempt to become a two-division world champion.
Standing in his path is the former unified featherweight champion and former interim lightweight champion, Gamboa (30-2, 18 KOs).
The Cuban fighter won the WBA and IBF featherweight titles in September 2010 when he beat Orlando Salido by unanimous decision. The 38-year-old has found a new lease on life since getting KO'd by pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford in June 2014 by winning seven of his last eight. This past July in his last bout, Gamoba knocked out Roman Martinez in the second round.
Even though Gamboa appears long in the tooth, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist and former unified featherweight titlist still presents the most significant test in Davis' short and stellar career.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has deemed Davis as boxing's next biggest mainstream attraction. A win over Gamboa doesn't prove his fact to be accurate, but would show how Davis can handle someone with the veteran prowess of Gamboa.
