The DAZN Boxing Show discussed where Frank Martin can go next after his latest victory.
Martin won by a comfortable unanimous decision at the weekend in Las Vegas after defeating Michel Rivera.
Speaking after the fight, Martin named Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Tank’s former opponent, Rolly Romero.
Davis defeated Romero earlier this year and is currently preparing for a January tune-up fight against Hector Garcia as he looks to sharpen his skills with a fight against Ryan Garcia in April.
Romero has not fought since his knockout against Davis in May and has no opponent scheduled for a comeback fight, so could be the easier fight to make for Davis. At that point either fighter could consider themselves ready for a title shot, particularly with Davis’ weekend win coming in a WBA lightweight eliminator, though that would put him in line for a clash with Devin Haney.
Undisputed champion Haney is linked to a clash with former four-belt lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko, meaning Davis may have to stay busy with other options.
Speaking on the DAZN Boxing Show, Akin ‘Ak’ Reyes said: “It was Rivera who went, a dominant performance from Frank Martin, a title eliminator in the lightweight division. It keeps stacking up.”
Bess praised his display, explaining: “Martin showed me things in there that I didn’t really see him do in other fights. I already saw the speed, I saw he’s very technical, and co-ordinated and really graceful in there, really smart with his punch placement.
“I saw him make an adjustment, too. He was trying to make an uppercut, he was trying to catch him with a counter-uppercut, but he kind of did a 45-degree angle left hand, and that’s what did him.
“Total domination, great job by Rivera by never giving up to the end.”
Ak added: “Martin made great adjustments, Rivera was doing the same thing that wasn’t working. Martin was just a superior fighter. I think Martin is going to the next level, he’s ready for whoever. He’s calling out Gervonta Davis, I like that talk of talk. He’s not that young, he’s ready to get to the nitty gritty and get the big bucks, fighting for the title.”
While Tank is the highest profile rival for Davis, Bess thought a fight with Romero would also appeal.
“He also mentioned Rolly, I like that fight,” he observed.
