GGG's next fight: Date, time, price, odds, full card for Gennadiy Golovkin vs. Sergiy DerevyanchenkoDAZN
Gennadiy Golovkin meets Sergiy Derevyanchenko on Oct. 5 for the vacant IBF middleweight title, live on DAZN.

One of boxing's biggest stars returns for the second time in four months on Saturday, Oct. 5, as Gennadiy Golovkin battles Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the vacant IBF middleweight championship at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Golovkin rival Canelo Alvarez had won the IBF belt in May against Daniel Jacobs in a title unification bout. It appeared then that Alvarez and Golovkin would lock horns for the third time, but Alvarez had other plans in mind for 2019.

Derevyanchenko was the top contender to face Alvarez, and the sanctioning body ordered a purse bid. The fight teams entered negotiations. A couple extensions were granted at the request of Alvarez's team at Golden Boy Promotions, but an agreement failed to materialize.

Because of that, Alvarez was stripped of the IBF belt. Golovkin was the No. 2 contender, so conversations began between GGG and Derevyanchenko's team. Talks went longer than expected, but finally terms were agreed upon, and the fight was on.

Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KOs) rebounded from the first loss of his career to Alvarez in September 2018 to notch a fourth-round knockout of Steve Rolls in June. The 37-year-old looks to become a two-time IBF titlist. He won the belt against David Lemieux in October 2015 and held it for nearly three years before he was stripped of the title — when, coincidentally, he failed to produce an agreement to fight then No. 1 challenger Derevyanchenko.

Derevyanchenko (13-1, 10 KOs) competes for the IBF strap for the second time. In October 2018, the Ukrainian came up just short, losing a split-decision to Jacobs. He rebounded in April with a unanimous-decision victory over Jack Culcay.

Golovkin wants another crack at Alvarez to prove to the boxing world that he won both Alvarez fights and the judges scored them wrong. The heavy hitter cannot get there unless he beats Derevyanchenko.
