Oscar De La Hoya has made the right call in abandoning his latest comeback. The former six weight world champion had been toying with the idea of returning to the ring and was even scheduled to perform in 2021 before his fight was postponed.
Now, “The Golden Boy,’ one of boxing’s most decorated stars, has confirmed his decision to stay retired.
In an outstanding career that saw the Californian capture Olympic glory before embarking on an incredible professional adventure, De La Hoya always sought the biggest challenges.
Making a success of any sort of comeback, 14 years after his last fight, would be the biggest one he has ever faced and his decision to call if off was welcomed on The DAZN Boxing Show.
“This is not a game,” said co-host Barak when discussing the subject.
“You can’t be 48 or 49 and decide to get back in the ring because you can die or be injured for the rest of your life.
"Oscar looked like he got in decent shape, but you seen Amir Khan last week at 35 years old, the first shot had him all wobbly legs. You can’t play at this sport.”
