Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a penchant for announcing his next fight during the fight weeks of other marquee name boxers to steal a little of their thunder and redirect all eyes on him.
Did Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez just take a page out of his former rival's playbook?
It sure feels that way, as Thursday saw Canelo announce his undisputed super middleweight championship fight against Caleb Plant for Nov. 6. He made the announcement two days before Saturday night's clash between Manny Pacquiao and Yordenis Ugas for Ugas' WBA (Super) welterweight title.
So, did Canelo pull a Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Chris Mannix weighed in on just that while appearing on a recent episode of the DAZN Boxing Show.
"Oh, it's interesting," Mannix began about the timing of Canelo's announcement. "I mean, in a way, it is a great opportunity for Fox to promote another big fight during a big fight. That's what networks tend to like to do.
"Though, at the same time, you're right. It does in a way overshadow the Pacquiao (fight). You know if this was different back when there were actual newspapers covering media, but there's only so many column inches and so much oxygen out there to talk about boxing," he continued.
"You know, some of that will now be consumed by talk about Canelo against Caleb plant, justifiably so. It's a big fight. But if I'm Manny Pacquiao, maybe I don't love Canelo right now!"
The fact that the luster from the proposed Pacquiao-Errol Spence Jr. fight waned after Spence was injured and replaced by Ugas might just compound the feeling of Canelo swooping in and stealing some of this weekend's shine with his announcement.
Mannix added: "You know, I think there's certainly a lot of air taken out of the balloon with the Spence fight being derailed because of Spence's injury."
