New WBA super lightweight champion Jose Valenzuela has been challenged to a rematch by his opponent, Isaac Cruz.
Cruz was the incumbent going into the fight in Los Angeles on Saturday night, but Valenzeuela came away with a decision victory.
‘Pitbull’ had been angling for a rematch with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis after his title defence, but after losing his strap he has now set his sights on running it back with last night’s opponent.
Speaking after the defeat, Cruz said of another chance to fight Valenzuela: “For sure. I’d like to lay it on the line and officially request a rematch.”
The victor celebrated his win, saying: “I’m speechless. Dream come true. I was 100 percent sure.
“I just had to be smart. I didn’t get desperate, I didn’t fall into the pressure, I stayed calm. His power was nothing crazy, but it was good. He was solid. I felt like I was in control the whole time.”
