The defeated Englishman's trainer was in no mood to defend the judges' decision.

Jack Catterall’s trainer reacted angrily to his fighter’s defeat, which came via a controversial split decision against Josh Taylor.

While the undefeated champion maintained he had done enough to win despite a subpar performance, many observers think the judges got the decision wrong.

Taylor looks likely to move up to 147lbs, negating the possibility of a rematch, though the defeated Englishman will probably be first in line to challenge for any vacant straps.

Catterall refused to be drawn on the controversy after the fight, but his trainer Jamie Moore was clearly upset.

"It's difficult to put into words how we feel,” he began.

"You're talking about a kid who has worked all his life for that moment.

"He waited three years for that opportunity.

"He did the right thing for boxing on the promise he would get the opportunity.

"He beat the champion in his own backyard and gets absolutely robbed.

"Think about the message that sends. My son will think: 'Why should I get into boxing?’

"It was snatched away. It's disgusting. He is absolutely heartbroken."
