Jai Opetaia responds to possible Oleksandr Usyk showdown

Jai Opetaia responds to possible Oleksandr Usyk showdownMark Robinson/Matchroom

Jai Opetaia is on the brink of career defining nights.

The Australian is currently the IBF cruiserweight champion and is set to fight on Wednesday live on DAZN against New Zealand's David Nyika.

If Opetaia manages to get past Nyika, then many fight fans will be expecting big things for the rest of 2025.

One potential fight which could present itself is former undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk if he decides to move down from heavyweight, and if this opportunity did arise, it is one which Opetaia would take with both hands.

"If it happens, it happens," Opetaia told The Stomping Ground

"I’m always open for it, I would never knock down a fight like that, that’s a fight I would take with both hands, 100%."

Usyk is currently sitting atop the ladder in the heavyweight division after beating Tyson Fury in two thrilling fights last year.

While the Ukrainian's next move has not been confirmed, a move back down to 200 lbs is one which Usyk has expressed an interest in after being the division's undisputed champion in 2018.
