Jaime Munguia has successfully defended his WBO junior middleweight title four times. On Friday, he stood face-to-face with the man who will try to take it away from him in his fifth title defense.
Patrick Allotey will square off with Munguia at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif., on DAZN on Saturday. But on Friday, it was all about making weight, which both fighters managed, with Munguia checking in at 154 pounds and Allotey at 153 pounds.
Munguia originally checked in at 154.2, but made weight after stripping from his underwear, the scale surrounded by towels.
The undefeated Munguia (33-0, 26 KOs) stared down his upcoming opponent, who himself boasts an impressive though not spotless record at 40-3, with 30 knockouts. Munguia won his last fight by a majority decision against Dennis Hogan in April. Allotey has been knocked out twice, but has won each of his past six fights, two coming by technical knockout and four by way of unanimous decision.
WBC women's super middleweight title holder Franchon Crews (5-1-0, 2 KOs) will also be given the chance to defend her belt when she faces off against Maricela Cornejo (12-2, 5 KOs) on the DAZN card. Jimenez used to be the WBC women's heavyweight champion.
Ryan Garcia showed up and met his weight at 135 for his lightweight fight against Avery Sparrow, scheduled as the card's co-main event, but Sparrow did not appear for the weigh-in, resulting in the fight being called off.
