For the past four years Mexican fighter Jaime Munguia liked the idea of facing Gennady Golovkin, and today it appears that the possibility is closer than ever.
In 2018 a very young Munguia tried to be Golovkin's replacement opponent, but the idea was stopped by the Athletic Commission, who used Munguia's lack of experience as a reason to not allow the fight. A couple of months later, the Tijuana native defeated Sadam Ali with a fourth round knockout and was crowned WBO super welterweight champion.
After five defenses, the Mexican moved up to the middleweight division and has now been waiting two years for a chance to challenge for the 160lbs title, while he moved up in the world rankings.
With Golovkin's second loss to Canelo and an imminent return of the Kazakh to the middleweight division, Munguia's team sees the possibility of reaching an agreement very close.
"Of course it is, but we are going to wait for it to happen, that it can be done. It would be for us a very good opportunity to know where we are", the former world champion and now Munguía's trainer, Erik Morales, said to Izquierdazo.
However, if the negotiations do not come off, then El Terrible Morales stressed that there are still two more options to make Jaime a world champion.
"There are two more champions. Let's hope one of the three will give us the opportunity," he added, referring to American Jermall Charlo, WBC titleholder, and Janibek Alimkhanuly of the WBO.
The team expects that Munguia's return, after the win over Jimmy Kelly, could come by November 19, possibly against English southpaw John Ryder.
"We're waiting for the title fight," he concluded. "Let's see when we get the opportunity or we get the mandatory, or that some champion is encouraged to give us the opportunity," he concluded.
