Jaime Munguia knocked out Englishman John Ryder in nine rounds on Saturday night at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Tijuana native got the fight he had been waiting for and is now aiming for the best at 168 pounds, as he wants to be world champion.
"The truth is that it would be a great fight between Mexicans and if I get the fight, it would be an honour," he added.
Munguía gradually demolished his opponent, who visited the canvas in the second, in the fourth and two more in the ninth.
"Jaime did what Canelo couldn't do. He knocked out the Gorilla. I'm very proud because Munguia has evolved," said Oscar de la Hoya, Munguia's co-promoter, who thinks it's a very positive thing that the young fighter is working with Freddie Roach.
The pressure in the fight was so great that Ryder's corner had to ask ringside officials to stop the fight and sounded the bell to alert the referee, who couldn't see because his back was turned.
"I prepared for this. I worked hard, I know they don't trust me and here are the results. I'm ready, here at 168. Ryder is a great fighter, I learned a lot and I'm going forward. He is a very strong fighter, I had to be very careful, he has a very hard head, but now I feel very happy," said Jaime Munguia.
The Tijuana native improved his undefeated record to 43-0 with 34 knockouts. Ryder suffered his seventh loss, his second in a row.
In the supporting bout, with a 10-round knockout, Mexican-American fighter Gabriel Fundora retained the International Boxing Federation flyweight crown.
The 21-year-old fighter stepped on the gas midway through the contest and forced her opponent, Christina Cruz, out of the contest. Cruz ended up turning her back on the fight and the referee was forced to stop the action.
