Caleb Plant already gave his side of the story as to why he smacked Jermall Charlo backstage at the Terence Crawford-Errol Spence Jr. weigh-in on July 28. The former super middleweight champion felt like Charlo crossed the line and disrespected him.
Well, now Jermell Charlo is shedding light on the incident involving his brother and explains how he was actually trying to be a voice of reason to diffuse the situation.
"I was kind of in the back before it started and Caleb, I pulled him aside right before it happened and said, 'Hey, Caleb, you got to do one of two things — you got to leave the situation or turn the other cheek, bro,'" Jermell began explaining to "The Breakfast Club."
He added: "I talked to [Plant] before the slap actually happened."
Jermell claims Plant told him 'your brother's tripping" to which he replied "some people, you just got to let them."
Charlo tacked on: "I didn't think it would go that far."
Plant claims to have been triggered by Jermall allegedly insulting him and tugging on his beard despite warnings to stop.
Regardless of how Jermell feels about the incident, he implored that payback is needed.
"They got to get that one back," Jermell continued about Jermall and his team. "I don't know what they're going to do — I'm talking about my brother's team.
"You go do it or hopefully you can do it in the ring. If you don't do it in the ring, you better go get your lick back. I don't know how you want to do it — just get it back."
