There are changes afoot in the heavyweight division, and Johnny Fisher wants to be a part of it.
The 25-year-old from London has won both of his fights in 2024 to extend his undefeated record to 12-0, with his most recent outing a first-round TKO victory over Alen Babic in July. Fisher is next in action in late December as part of the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury 2 card, where he will take on fellow Briton Dave Allen.
Fisher aims to topple his compatriot to continue climbing the ladder of boxing's glamour division, and while he'll be in the same arena as main eventers Usyk and Fury, he envisions a future when he'll be the the one topping the card in massive events.
For the "Romford Bull," its just a matter of time that the names at the top of the card change, with the biggest names now well into their 30s. With more good showings, Fisher hopes to be there, too.
"You can see the Furys, the Usyks, the [Anthony] Joshuas going in the not too distant future, [Deontay] Wilder has probably already gone," Fisher told talkSPORT. "In the next year-to-18-months, I don't think it will be any longer than that, we will see the new crop of guys coming through.
"We saw a brilliant win for Fabio Wardley over Frazer Clarke [earlier this month], and that has really announced for approaching world level fights.
"Great Britain is leading the charge. There's good names up and down that heavyweight list. So, I'm just privilged to be mentioned within those other names.
"I know I can do something in this sport if I just dedicate myself and give it a good go."
Fisher watched Wardley dismantle Clarke in an all-British clash to retain the British, Commonwealth, and WBA Continental heavyweight titles, marking the beginning to the changing of the guard he believes is happening. A few years Wardley's junior, Fisher found the fight inspiring and aspirational.
"Fabio after that empathic win was impressive," he said. "I thought it was a 50/50 fight and Frazer looked in good condition but when you have that ability to put punches together and you've got that power, then you can try a fight on a six pence.
"So, seeing that gives me amazing confidence in myself that I can do the same thing."
Fisher thinks Fabio will defend the British title one more time before moving on to world level fights, after which point the domestic strap will be up for grabs.
Could he be on the shortlist to contest the British title against someone else, or even face Wardley for it? If so, it's something Fisher would welcome with open arms.
"If that's on the table [a British title shot], when that makes perfect sense then that is a fight that can happen next year," Fisher said.
"If I end my career and I've won the British title and that's my limit then I'm happy, with the iconic names and iconic nature of that belt is something I could have only dreamed of four or five years ago.
"But I really do believe that is within my reach. It is my aim to win that belt, even it it takes two, three, four bites of the cherry to achieve to win that title."
