Josh Warrington will defend the IBF featherweight championship for the third time against Sofiane Takoucht on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, England, the fighters announced at a Wednesday news conference.
Warrington (29-0, 6 KOs) is fighting in his hometown as a professional for the 13th time. He captured the belt via split decision over Lee Selby in May 2018. He proceeded to dominate Carl Frampton in December and beat Kid Galahad by split decision in June.
The 28-year-old was looking for unification clashes with either WBO titlist Oscar Valdez or WBA titleholder Leo Santa Cruz. Valdez recently dropped his title to move up to 130 pounds, and a Santa Cruz didn't come to fruition, so Takoucht was next on the list.
"From what I’ve seen, Takoucht is tough and got his IBF ranking through hard work," Warrington said in a press release. “This is a massive opportunity for him. I have to stay focused and not take my eye off the ball because I am after the biggest fights in the division.”
Takoucht (35-3-1, 13 KOs) has momentum heading into the biggest fight of his career, riding an eight-fight winning streak. The Frenchman defeated Yesner Talavera in June by points to earn the opportunity at Warrington. The southpaw recognizes what lies ahead but plans on spoiling the plans Warrington has for the future.
“When the call came to travel to Leeds and challenge Josh, I said, ‘yes’ straight away," Takoucht said. "It’s a chance to beat the best featherweight in the world. He beat Lee Selby when nobody thought he could win and then a great fighter, Carl Frampton. It was close against Kid Galahad, but he found a way to win. I am sure he will look at me and think I am easier than his last three opponents, but I won’t let this opportunity go. Get ready for a shock.”
