Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez: What happened in their first two fights?

Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez: What happened in their first two fights?Matchroom

Juan Francisco Estrada finally gets a trilogy rematch against Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez this Saturday, in an event shown live on DAZN.

The pair first fought a little over a decade ago before being reunited in the ring last year. Right now, the score stands at 1-1, head to head, and a decider was expected last March.

Unfortunately, Estrada had to drop out due to a Covid-19 infection and he is now ready to get the third fight done in December, in one of the most anticipated fights of the year.

Let’s look back at the first two fights, which shows why everyone is ready for number three.

November 17, 2012

The Mexican dropped down from flyweight to light flyweight to take on WBA champion Gonzalez, in the first time he would compete outside his home country, at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in California.

Gonzalez was on top throughout, and won the fight on a unanimous decision after it went the distance, 116-112, 116-112, 118-110.

The Nicaraguan made it clear that he would entertain a rematch later in his career, but few would expect it would take close to a decade to come around.

This time Estrada was the champion going into the fight, holding the WBA (Super) super flyweight strap, with Gonzalez looking to lift the belt from his opponent.

2,529 punches were thrown in total by the fighters, as measured by Compubox. The figure was the highest ever recorded by the system for the 115lb division. Those statistics suggested that ‘Chocolatito’ had landed the majority of the punches, but Estrada was awarded a split decision victory, 117-111, 115-113, 113-15.

DAZN were set to broadcast the trilogy in March earlier this year, but with six weeks to go, Estrada had to pull out as a result of a Covid-19 bout. That sets the scene for a late 2022 chance to run it back for a third - and probably final - time.
