Canelo Alvarez faces Jermell Charlo this month.

Canelo Alvarez heads into an intriguing encounter on September 30 when he defends his super-middleweight title against Jermell Charlo.

The bout will see the Mexican fighter welcome Charlo into a weight class two divisions above what he’s accustomed to but is Canelo on the slide heading into his next contest? Virgil Hunter certainly thinks so.

After losing to Dmitry Bivol last year, Canelo has rebounded well with victories over Gennadiy Golovkin and John Ryder.

Despite being back to winning ways following the Bivol setback, Canelo’s recent performances have brought serious scrutiny and Hunter believes Canelo is not the fighter he once was.

“I think Canelo is slipping. I think he’s very hittable. I think he only throws one or two punches,” said Hunter when speaking to Fight Hub TV

“I think the stamina problem is right there. Jermell is much more durable than Amir [Khan], has much more punching power and I think Canelo is showing some slippage because he seems to be able to throw one or two punches at one time.”
