James Toney has urged Shakur Stevenson to be patient and slow down his pursuit for a showdown with Gervonta Davis.
The Newark, New Jersey man is back in action this weekend when he faces Artem Harutyunyan with the WBC lightweight title on the line.
Victory for Stevenson is almost certain to begin speculation linking him to a fight with Davis as both men occupy high positions at 135lbs.
Toney, a former world champion himself, is a huge admirer of Stevenson, but he’s not convinced he’s ready for Davis at this point.
“Shakur’s a young fighter. Let him develop and then when it’s time you make a move,” said Toney when speaking to Fight Hub TV.
“But now, Tank got that momentum. It’s bad for Shakur. He’ll ruin his whole career like [Crawford did to] Errol Spence Jr.”
