Legendary fighter reveals how he thinks Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury would fare in his era

Fury and Joshua are both plotting their way back to the top.

Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are both looking to rebuild their careers after recent losses, but one fighter believes they would've been contenders in a previous era.

Larry Holmes was a dominant heavyweight in the 1980s and after sharing the ring with the likes of Muhammad Ali, Michael Spinks, and Mike Tyson, he’s seen as one of the division's best ever fighters.

Famed for his accurate jab, Holmes’ time in boxing was a lengthy one, but at his peak, he was a destructive fighter.

The former world champion was so close to emulating Rocky Marciano's incredible 49-0 record before losing to Spinks, but his ledger still remains an impressive one.

Still a keen follower of the sport, Homles has recently commented on today’s fighters following an eventful couple of years that eventually saw Oleksandr Usyk crowned undisputed ruler.

Beterbiev vs. Bivol  fight card

  • Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol
  • Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Kamil Szeremeta
  • Fabio Wardley vs. Frazer Clarke
  • Jai Opetaia vs. Jack Massey
  • Ben Whittaker vs. Liam Cameron
  • Skye Nicolson vs. Raven Chapman
  • Mohammaed Alakel vs. Jesus Gonzalez

Two fighters he defeated to reach that level, Joshua and Fury, are seen as two of this era’s best heavyweights, and Holmes has had his say on where they would feature when he was a fighter.

“We were tougher. We never said, ‘who are we going to fight?’ We just fought. We fought everybody, no picking and choosing,” said Holmes when speaking to OLBG

“Anthony Joshua’s a good fighter, you can’t take that away from him, he’s a good fighter. He would have been a top ten heavyweight in my era.

“He’d be a good fighter in my era, same goes for Tyson Fury. Those guys are dedicated, but you had to fight each other in my era; there was no way around it.”
