Leigh Wood said he was ‘devastated’ to see Michael Conlan hurt so seriously as he defended his WBA featherweight title.
The fight was shown live on DAZN on Saturday night, capturing the moment in the 12th round when the Irishman was knocked out before falling headfirst out of the ring.
Conlan was later taken to hospital and confirmed he was in good health on Sunday morning, but speaking soon after the fight, Wood was unsure of his opponent’s status.
Speaking after the win, Wood praised his rival, saying: “The game plan would have made that fight a lot easier.
“I struggled because Mick's a very good fighter, a two-time Olympian.
“Skillwise he’s hard, a southpaw. I need to work on that a lot. Emotion-wise I kept it together. I chipped away at his body.”
When asked about the final moments of the fight, Wood said he was: “Devastated. I hope he’s alright, I heard he’s up and talking. I'd like to see him and hope he’s all right.
“I hope Michael is all right. I can't celebrate until I know he is all right.”
