Liam Smith's opponent wishlist if Chris Eubank Jr rematch falls through

Liam Smith's opponent wishlist if Chris Eubank Jr rematch falls throughDAZN

Liam Smith is hoping to face one of two British rivals if a date cannot be finalised for a rematch with Chris Eubank Jr.

The pair first went head-to-head in January in a fight which saw Smith stop Eubank Jr in the fourth round.

Eubank Jr then reactivated his rematch clause a month later, but following an injury to Smith in training camp, the contest was set to take place on July 1 before being delayed once again with a date in September being the new target.

However, with negotiations supposedly resuming for a fight between Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, Smith may have to look elsewhere for an opponent for his second fight of 2023.

When speaking to talkSPORT, Smith reiterated that he was still training for a second meeting with Eubank Jr, but if the rematch cannot be made, the Liverpudlian has sights set on two domestic names which includes a former world champion.

“I just laugh at it. It’s nothing to do with me really. I can only control my own destiny. I was getting ready for the fight with Chris, I got injured, I’m over my injury now and back in the gym. I’m gonna look for the fight in September. If Chris signs then Chris signs, if not we’ll see," Smith said.

"Look, anybody. You’ve got [Kell] Brook, you’ve got Conor Benn. The four [super welterweight] world titles might become vacant now Charlo’s fighting Canelo. I can still make that. I’m in a very good position.

"First and foremost I’m tied into the Chris rematch. If he chooses to go elsewhere, then the world’s my oyster. And if he chooses to fight me, I’ll wipe the floor with him again.”
