Upcoming British prospect Luther Clay takes on Dario Morello on the undercard of Orlando Fiordigiglio vs. Sam Eggington on Sept. 19, and DAZN News caught up with the 23-year-old ahead of his biggest fight to date.
DAZN News: What’s your background?
Luther Clay: I was born in Durban, South Africa, and I lived there till I was 6 years old. Then I moved to Bracknell, England, and been living there since. Growing up, I was quite a mischievous kid, always found myself in some sort of trouble, fighting and that. I stole a couple things now and then, but my parents beat it out of me.
DN: Was it that mischievous side of you that got you into boxing?
LC: I think I’ve always had that natural fighting ability in me from as early as I can remember. I always used to get into fights, confrontations in and outside of school. When I first moved to Bracknell, there weren’t many black kids in school or around town, so I sometimes got into fights due to attempted teasing, and I was never shy to throw a fist.
Eventually, I found myself going to a boxing gym at age 15 because my friend suggested I go. Any time I’ve been threatened, I’ve fought, and the first time I got punched in a ring I wanted to hurt the guy back. It’s natural for me; I love fighting.
DN: As you’re an upcoming prospect, what difficulties do you face in day-to-day life that people might not realize?
LC: Mostly it’s the financial difficulties, but nothing too major. As there’s no real money being made from my boxing at the moment, it makes it difficult for me to do a lot of things, but I have some great sponsors backing me like Bracknell Town FC, the SB Group, Beaulieu Homes, Plumbworld, Admiral Cunningham Pub, Al’s Family Butchers and many others that give me the financial backing to keep me going.
DN: Can you remember how you felt when you made your first ring walk?
LC: The first time I did my ring walk I was thinking "What the f— am I doing here?" And I still think the same till this day (laughs). It’s a very daunting feeling, but you must own that energy and use it to focus and perform.
DN: How would you describe your fighting style?
LC: I think that I’m still finding my identity and style to be honest. I adapt to what’s in front of me, do what needs to be done in the ring to get the win.
DN: What’s your boxing dream?
LC: Firstly, to be financially stable, refine my skills so I can compete at the highest level and of course one day win a world title — that is the dream for me. If I didn’t think I could win a world title, I would stop boxing right now.
DN: Tell me about your opponent, Dario Morello?
LC: Dario Morello is busy switch hitter, calls himself the "Spartan," so let’s see if he’s going to fight or run. It should be a very interesting fight.
DN: How much are you looking forward to showcasing your talent in Florence?
LC: I’m looking forward to fighting in Florence and being on DAZN and Sky Sports. Plus, winning this WBO global belt and being ranked in the WBO is an amazing opportunity for me.
