Pedro Diaz believes that Michael Conlan was fully committed to his training camp in Miami, and the only time he saw Miami beach was when he was “sweating his ass off.”
Conlan decamped to Diaz’s Mundo Boxing to prepare for the clash with Jordan Gill, which takes place live on DAZN on December 2.
The Irish 32-year-old fell just short in two titles fights in the past couple of years, when he dramatically lost to Leigh Wood in 2022, and against Luis Alberto Lopez early in 2023.
As a result he decided to change up his changing regime and has been working with Diaz, who has trained fighters such as Miguel Cotto in the past.
Speaking to DAZN Boxing, Diaz was asked how Conlan had adjusted to Miami compared to his home city of Belfast, and he explained that the way he trains boxers means there is little language barrier.
“Usually with boxers, I’ve never had a problem communicating, because of my usage of numbers, a lot of boxers are able to understand the language of boxing,” he began.
“Once they feel comfortable with that they start to feel better doing routines, and things like that.”
Diaz believes that the focused mentality that he and Conlan brought to camp meant they gelled well.
He explained: “We have a really focused camp. A lot of the boxers who come here know that a lot of champions have trained here.
“When Mick came over, he knew that we were serious and he didn't come here to mess around or party. That’s the reason we work so well together.
“I work on a two or three month plan, for everyday, to work out what I will do with fighters, specifically, the strengths and what weaknesses to work on.
“Because of the heat of Miami, luckily it was the end of the year, a lot of training sessions were done at sunrise. Conlan would be there to see the sunrise of Miami beach, but he’d be sweating his ass off!”
