Naoya Inoue retained his undisputed super-bantamweight title with another destructive performance against Luis Nery.
Inoue stopped the brave Mexican in the sixth round, but he had to overcome a major scare after he was dropped for the first time in his career.
Nery made the better start as a well-timed left hook floored Inoue and momentarily hurt the undefeated fighter.
Nery moved in quick to try and finish the bout and although Inoue did look buzzed after rising to his feet, he showed great composure to see out the round.
Any chances of a huge upset were quickly shot down in the second round as Inoue registered his own knockdown with a big left hook.
Nery would go down again in round five and after being dropped for the final time in the following session, the referee made the right call in halting the bout.
Inoue has essentially defeated all the leading challengers at super-bantamweight so it’s unknown what his next move will be, but he did shake hands with Sam Goodman, another contender, during the post-fight interview. Could that be next?
