Oleksandr Usyk promoter offers update on potential Filip Hrgovic fight

Oleksandr Usyk promoter offers update on potential Filip Hrgovic fightMatchroom
Oleksandr Usyk was originally set to face Tyson Fury on February 17.

Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk is still eager to fight despite the postponement of his clash with Tyson Fury according to his promoter Alex Krassyuk.

Usyk and Fury were set to meet for the undisputed heavyweight title on February 17 in Saudi Arabia, but the fight has since been postponed after Fury suffered a deep cut in sparring on Friday.

With Fury set to be sidelined for a number of months, it could give Usyk an opportunity to face his mandatory challenger for the IBF title, Filip Hrgovic.

While the initial February 17 event will not be going ahead, Krassyuk revealed in an interview with Boxing News that talks are ongoing between the two camps and is confident that the fight can be made if one obstacle is successfully navigated.

"No, we are just talking," Krassyuk responded when asked whether a fight between Usyk and Hrgovic was close to being finalised.

"His people reached out saying that Filip Hrgovic is in camp, he was getting prepared for March 8. He’s under contract with the Saudi people and he gave an interview to ESPN saying that he’s ready to take the challenge and fight Usyk on February 17 which is good.

"The only thing to satisfy is Hrgovic’s financial demands and the fight is on."

Hrgovic's next fight looked set to be on the undercard of Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou on March 8 against Joseph Parker, however, those plans have changed with Parker now set to face Zhilei Zhang.

With no immediate fight date or opponent booked, perhaps now is the time for Hrgovic to take his chance and face one of the world's best pound-for-pound fighters for the IBF, WBA and WBO world heavyweight titles.
