Derek Chisora believes that the time has come for VAR to be used in boxing after Oleksandr Usyk’s controversial defeat of Daniel Dubois.

The heavyweight pair fought on Saturday night in Wroclaw, Poland, to contest the IBF, WBO and WBA belts held by the Ukrainian, and Usyk ultimately won with a convincing ninth-round stoppage.

However Dubois might have been champion four rounds earlier had a low blow decision gone his way.

The referee suggested that Dubois’ powerful right-hander was illegally low, and gave Usyk several minutes to recover up against the ropes, when it looked like he could have been counted out instead.

Dubois and his team fervently believed that the referee took the wrong decision, and fellow British heavyweight Chisora agreed with them.

He told Talksport: “I’ll be honest about it.

“You know what they need to do now? We need to get VAR in boxing now.

“We need to get VAR in boxing because right now, Daniel has lost the fight.

“He lost the rematch, which is about £20million or £30m. He lost money.

“So now we need VAR. All the other games have them. Tennis, football, we need it in boxing now. We need VAR in boxing and that’s it.”
