There’s only 12 days left until Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk collide for a second time, live on DAZN Pay-Per-View.
As part of the DAZN News Countdown to the fight, we go back to 2018 and the scene of one of boxing’s greatest ever recoveries as Fury climbed off the canvas in a dramatic round 12.
Tyson Fury was not supposed to trouble Deontay Wilder when the pair met in 2018.
The British star was having his third fight of the year, but he was facing a huge step up against Wilder who was the reigning WBC champion.
Fury had been inactive since 2015, but he intended to be busy when returning three years later and his reward at the end was a showdown with Wilder in Los Angeles.
After defeating Wladimir Klitschko to become unified heavyweight champion, Fury was supposed to embark on a trail of dominance, but a series of personal issues kept him away from boxing.
In his absence, Wilder, along with Anthony Joshua, were the fighters who occupied the top spaces, but the return of Fury was always looming in the background.
After his battle with Wilder was finalised, Fury, with Ben Davison and Freddie Roach in his corner, was a man leaving no stone unturned as he looked to become a two-time heavyweight champion despite still being lineal ruler.
In Wilder, Fury was facing an opponent in devastating form, but he had full belief his qualities could help him get the job done.
Fury showed no signs of ring rust as he dominated the bulk of the fight’s early exchanges, but there was always the possibility that Wilder could find the shot to end matters immediately.
In round nine, Wilder did manage to nail his target as he dropped Fury, but the Englishman recovered well and continued to push on.
Entering the final round, it looked like Fury was about to pull off a huge shock, but Wilder had other ideas as he finally demonstrated why he was feared at his absolute peak.
A right hand sent Fury down and there was also a left hook as he was falling, and the premature celebrations from Wilder appeared to be justified as Fury lay motionless on the floor.
As the count reached eight, Fury quickly rose and told the referee he could continue, but it felt like Wilder was only one big punch away from ending the contest for good.
Fury rallied brilliantly, even firing back, and after being on the verge of being counted out, he was back in the round, and back in the fight.
The 10-8 round did aid Wilder, who had to feel satisfied with a draw, and the mutual respect between both men at the end was a nice touch after the judges failed to split them.
Fury and Wilder would meet two more times, with Fury claiming a stoppage in both fights, but the vision of him climbing off the floor when all seemed lost is perhaps the endearing image from the terrific three fight series.
