With 19 days to go until Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury 2, we focus on that number, and it takes us back to 2021.
Oleksandr Usyk had dominated at cruiserweight, and he was ready to do the same at heavyweight.
DAZN News looks at Usyk’s 19th professional contest and how he overcome Anthony Joshua to become unified heavyweight champion.
Oleksandr Usyk had it all to when he fought Anthony Joshua at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with heavyweight glory on the line.
The magical Ukrainian had impressed in the division below with wins over top quality operators such as Tony Bellew and Murat Gassiev, but new challengers awaited him at heavyweight.
Joshua, then reigning heavyweight champion, was seen as a much more dangerous threat than Chisora and he also possessed more power and size.
Usyk began the fight with the bookmakers a significant underdog, but it was clear in the opening stages of the fight that he would be a huge problem for the fan’s favourite.
Usyk’s southpaw jab was causing problems and after building an early lead, there were numerous concerned faces in the Joshua camp as their man struggled to insert any authority on the fight.
As the fight moved into the championship rounds, it was clear that Joshua would require a stoppage or multiple knockdowns, but it was Usyk who was putting the pressure on.
Although everybody watching the fight knew Usyk only had to remain on his feet to be victorious, the challenger took no chances as he gave everything in the last session.
In the final seconds of the fight, Usyk hurt Joshua and with the champion struggling, Usyk looked to finish his stricken opponents and score a memorable stoppage.
The pair would engage in a rematch the following year and Usyk would once again be victorious.
