Sitting on his stool at the end of the sixth round, Andy Ruiz Jr. was faced with a decision — either let Anthony Joshua off the hook or finish the job and deliver a life-changing result.
The 15:1 underdog went with the latter and punched his way into boxing history. The electric moment is one of many sequences commented on by the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Buster Douglas and more as part of the documentary "One Night," reliving the evening that Ruiz became the first-ever Mexican-American heavyweight champion of the world.
During the seventh round, Ruiz ferociously unloaded a barrage of punches to drop Joshua for the third time in the fight.
"He just decided, you know what? I'm going to rewrite this f—ing book," Stallone says of the moment as part of "One Night," which was produced by DAZN and Stallone's Balboa Productions.
"That's when the pure savagery kicks in," he adds. "Andy smells blood and he smells defeat."
Another barrage of punches knocked down Joshua again and made him spit out his mouthpiece, and the ref waved off the fight seconds later, crowning a new king of the ring by seventh-round TKO in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.
"It just wasn't supposed to happen," Stallone says, "but it did."
For Ruiz, the victory was especially savory, considering he wasn't expected to pose a threat to Joshua and that he rose off the canvas from a vicious third-round knockdown to drop the British boxer twice in the same frame.
Perhaps Tyson said it best.
"That's what overcoming adversity, resilience, is all about: The ability to never give up," the former world champion says in the documentary.
