De La Hoya has spoken out about his former ally.

Oscar De La Hoya played a significant role in guiding Canelo Alvarez to the top of the boxing world.

The former fighter was Canelo’s longtime promoter, but since their well-documented split, the pair have repeatedly traded barbs.

This September Canelo will defend his super-middleweight title against Edgar Berlanga, a fight being shown live on DAZN in the U.S. and Canada, and the Mexican icon will have plenty of options if successful.

One possible route could lead him to David Benavidez, but De La Hoya believes Canelo isn’t interested in that fight.

“I thought I would never say this, but Canelo is scared,” said De La Hoya when speaking to Fight Hub TV.

“We’ve been begging Canelo, ‘Please, we want this fight.’ I want it as a fan. I want this fight because it’s a great fight for the sport of boxing, for the sport we love.”
