UFC President Dana White triggered a mass wave of fan speculation in the early hours of Wednesday morning when he posted a photo of himself, Floyd Mayweather and a third very important individual to social media.
Joining Mayweather and White in the image is RIZIN CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara. RIZIN helped stage the infamous exhibition between the 50-0 boxer and Tenshin Nasukawa in 2018, which the American won with ease.
The post led many to wonder if a big announcement involving all three is forthcoming, which in turn made some wonder if Mayweather vs. YouTube celebrity Logan Paul, a spectacle that was originally set for earlier this year only to be postponed, would even be happening at all now.
Another thought running through the minds of some was the possibility of Mayweather, 44, perhaps coming out of retirement yet again for a serious non-exhibition fight.
Mayweather and White had met in late 2019 to discuss potentially working together, only for the COVID-19 pandemic to put paid to any such plans.
White told ESPN last year: “The world imploded [due to COVID-19] after we were talking about doing some things together.”
However, with crowds slowly beginning to return to both MMA and boxing events, those discussions look to have been revived.
