'Rolly' Romero explains how he beat Manuel Jaimes in super lightweight showdown

'Rolly' Romero explains how he beat Manuel Jaimes in super lightweight showdownPremier Boxing Champions

Rolando "Rolly" Romero got back to winning ways when he defeated Manuel Jaimes by unanimous decision on Saturday night.

The super lightweight fighters met on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas, and Romero took full advantage of the bright lights of his hometown to stake a claim for a future world title shot.

Showing good defence against an aggressive Jaimes, former WBA title holder Romero held off his opponent well enough to land the punches that swayed the judges in his favour.

"I needed a tough 10-round fight against someone hungry and that's what I got tonight,” Romero said after the bout. “I was doing a lot of stuff tonight that I should have done in my earlier fights.”

The Las Vegas native explained that he allowed Jaimes to be aggressive in the earlier rounds before coming forward himself towards the end of the fight, landing 19 and 16 power punches in rounds eight and nine, respectively.

"Jaimes was coming forward a lot, but I was controlling the pace,” Romero said. “The fight was going how I wanted it to. In the later rounds I started coming forward more and landing more body shots.

"Hopefully I'm fighting for a title next. I have my eye on any of the champions."
