Rolly Romero talks must-win fight to bounce back from knockout loss to 'Pitbull' Cruz

Rolly Romero talks must-win fight to bounce back from knockout loss to 'Pitbull' CruzDAZN
The former WBA super lightweight world champion needs to get back on track against Manuel Jaimes on September 14, live on DAZN.

The last time boxing fans saw Rolando "Rolly" Romero in action, he was badly thumped toward an eighth-round TKO loss to Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz in March.

That defeat, the second of Romero's pro career, had him also losing the WBA super lightweight world championship. On September 14 as part of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga main card, live on DAZN, Romero will look to get his career back on track when he clashes with Manuel Jaimes in a fight that "Rolly" is calling a must-win.

“Manuel Jaimes is a tough opponent, and I’m not taking him lightly,” said Romero in a press release from Swanson Communications. “He’s got good skills and a lot of heart, but I believe my power and speed will be the difference. I’ve studied his style, and we’ve put together a game plan that I’m confident will win this fight. I’m going to win this fight because I have to win this fight, that’s the only thing on my mind.”

The fight against "Pitbull" started off poorly for Romero when a counter left hook from Cruz turned his legs into jelly in the opening round. That paved the way for Cruz to batter Romero relentlessly toward eventually stopping him.

However, the 29-year-old Romero (15-2, 13 KOs) believes this training camp has been game-changer for him, especially honing in on his mental toughness.

"This training camp has been one of the best I've had,” said Romero. “We've focused on refining my technique, increasing my power, and sharpening my mental game. My team and I have put in countless hours in the gym, and I feel stronger and more prepared than ever. Coach [Ismael] Salas has pushed me to new limits and I’m excited to showcase those improvements in the ring."

The 24-year-old Jaimes (16-1-1, 11 KOs) enters this bout on a four-fight winning streak and Romero knows what a victory would spell for his career.

"A win against Jaimes will be a step back in the right direction,” said Romero. “It opens up opportunities for bigger fights against all the big names. I’m looking to dominate and make a statement that I’m ready for anyone in the division. I want to add this guy to my highlight reel and set the stage for what’s next."

He added: “This fight is about making a statement and getting back in the win column. As always, I’m coming for the knockout.”
