WBA female minimumweight champion Seniesa Estrada explained her ‘Superbad’ nickname is a tribute to the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard.
Estrada beat Anabel Ortiz back in March to secure the division title and was speaking to the DAZN Boxing Show about her career so far, which has seen her secure a 20-0, 8KO record.
Asked about her moniker, she said: “My favourite fighter is Sugar Ray Leonard, and I read his book about five, 10 times, and in his book he talks about how they would call him Superbad in the gym ‘cos he was superbad.
“Sugar Ray Leonard is the man, and that’s where I got it from.”
The 28-year-old American also thought her alias also gave her the chance to enhance her superhero status, given she wears a cape into the ring.
“The whole cape thing, the superhero thing is something that is really cool and that lots of kids, younger girls and people can look at in an inspiring way,” she said.
