Shawn Porter names the current major world champion he thinks is 'overrated'

Shawn Porter names the current major world champion he thinks is 'overrated'DAZN

Jaron Ennis is seen as one of the brightest talents in boxing, but one former world champion isn't impressed with the Philadelphia fighter.

Earlier this month, Ennis retained his welterweight with victory over Karen Chukhadzhian, but the performance drew some criticism as ‘Boots’ was forced to work hard throughout.

In 2025, Ennis is expected to take a significant leap in class as he continues to be linked to showdowns with Terence Crawford and Vergil Ortiz, but he’ll need to show an improvement from his last outing to impose himself on such bouts.

Shawn Porter, who reigned as champion at 147lbs, is aware of what it takes to be an elite fighter after a successful run that brought many entertaining moments.

Despite losing to both Crawford and Errol Spence, Porter gave everything and he’s now one of boxing’s most respected voices after walking away from competing.

With the vast majority of the boxing world still believing that Ennis can dominate at the highest level, Porter is not fully convinced.

“Boots is overrated. He had one fight in 2022, for all of the training that he does. two fights in 2023, for all of that training,” said Porter when speaking on The Porter Way Podcast

“This now being only his second fight in 2024 against an Eastern European fighter with a style you never see and a name you never knew.

“This is a rematch, so he knows the name, but Philly don’t know the name and the boxing world don’t know the name. I’m not trying to be disrespectful to Chukhadzhian but you expect him to get up and get ready and be that guy. It ain’t happening. He needs to move up to 154lbs.”
