'Into the hundreds!' - Triple figures for sparring partners Sunny Edwards and Galal Yafai before big date

'Into the hundreds!' - Triple figures for sparring partners Sunny Edwards and Galal Yafai before big dateMark Robinson / Matchroom Boxing

Sunny Edwards believes him and Galal Yafai have sparred "into the hundreds" in terms of rounds and promises "fireworks" when they meet live on DAZN this weekend.

The one time IBF flyweight champion faces the gold-winning star of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for the honour of the interim WBC title at bp pulse LIVE in Birmingham.

For both men, it is the culmination of a story that began with an amateur bout and expanded to being sparring partners throughout their respective careers to date.

Speaking on DAZN's FACE OFF before their clash, Edwards estimated they are into three figures when asked how many rounds the two have gone behind closed doors.

Usyk vs Fury competition

"I would say definitely into the hundreds," he said. "I would say a couple of hundred. From amateurs to camps we’ve done as pros and in-between, I’d say definitely, yeah.

"I've said I've always felt like the man. These are competitive back and forth fights. Galal is probably the same. We don't have judges telling us [the results]. I get out happy.

"Maybe I'm just deluded [but] they are great. The reason I'm most excited about this fight is that when I get into the ring with Galal, it's fireworks. We make each other fight."

Edwards has the bragging rights between the two, having won at amateur, but is the only one of the pair with a professional loss to their name, holding a 21-1 fight record.

Yafai is conversely older but less experienced after turning pro later in his career, though he is unbeaten at 8-0 after his most recent win over Sergio Oliva in September.
