Padraig McCrory believes that Canelo Alvarez remains an outstanding fighter but might no longer be at his peak.
At 33, Alvarez has fought 64 fights professionally and remains the undisputed super middleweight champion. However he suffered a 2022 loss to Dmitry Bivol at light heavyweight, his first defeat since Floyd Mayweather a decade ago.
He has racked up three wins since then, but his trilogy victory over Gennadiy Golovkin and mandatory defence against John Ryder did little to suggest he was back to his best. However, a win against Jermell Charlo in September last year was much more dominant.
Canelo is yet to pick his next opponent, though rumours persist he will fight Jermell’s brother, Jermall, in May.
McCrory meanwhile is going to fight Edgar Berlanga on DAZN.com on February 24, but one day hopes to face Alvarez.
“As a fighting man and as a boxer, I fully believe I can beat the man,” McCrory told BoxingScene.
He added: “I think he’s elite, I think he’s a superstar but he’s shown that he might not be the same fighter that he was.”
