If Terence Crawford defeats Errol Spence Jr. in their highly-anticipated mega bout July 29, he will become the undisputed welterweight king and improve to 40-0.
But even if that happens, “Bud” doesn’t have any desire to chase down Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 mark.
When asked about eclipsing Mayweather’s pristine record, the reigning WBO world welterweight champion didn’t hesitate to shut any thought of it down.
“Nah, I ain’t ever thought of 50-0,” Crawford told CBS Sports Radio’s “Maggie & Perloff” recently. “That’s Mayweather’s thing. That’s his record. I commend him and he could have that.”
When asked if he doesn’t want 11 more fights, Crawford added with a smile: “Not at all.”
That being said, the 35-year-old Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs) saluted Mayweather and heralded the legend as the all-time welterweight GOAT.
“It would have to be Mayweather,” Crawford said. “Everything — not just because of the record, fighting style, everything that surrounds ‘Money’ Mayweather. It would have to be Mayweather.”
While he did acknowledge the likes of “Sugar” Ray Leonard and Wilfred Benitez, even they couldn’t compare to Mayweather in Crawford’s evaluation.
“Those were great fighters but when you talk about all-time welterweight,” he said, “nobody compared to Mayweather at all.”
