The DAZN Boxing Show discussed whether Deontay Wilder will be able to make another comeback after his third career defeat.
Wilder’s previous losses were both against Tyson Fury as part of their trilogy series for the WBC heavyweight championship, with the Briton emerging victorious in two of the fights, with the first match-up ending in a draw.
Wilder had been working with Malik Scott as he plotted a comeback, but had just a single round against Robert Helenius as part of his competitive preparation in the last two years.
Against Joseph Parker at the "Day of Reckoning" in Saudi Arabia, Wilder was a shadow of his best self, and Parker was barely threatened by Wilder’s legendary power.
Speaking to The DAZN Boxing Show, Reyes was disappointed by Wilder’s performance.
He explained: “Obviously Deontay is always a threat to the very last round, and there was that aspect going into the fight, and there was something ahead: Deontay Wilder vs. Anthony Joshua was the most anticipated heavyweight showdown in the last 40 years.
“We were looking forward to that fight, and we thought during the fight we thought Parker would pose some sort of threat, but at some point he would be vulnerable and get caught with that right hand, and that would be all she wrote, but that never happened.
“I think that’s because Wilder did not fight to the best of his abilities and land that jab, so Parker was able to get close, where that’s not Deontay’s best attribute, not fighting at the inside.
“I think he can come back, he has the power to beat anybody. I don’t want to see the last of Wilder, I love redemption stories.”
Barak Bess agreed with Reyes that Wilder could still come back if he just added a little variety to his game.
He explained: “You can never write Deontay Wilder off. I saw a different Deontay Wilder that night. Could it be that he’s 38 years old? I don’t know. He didn’t let his hands go, that was strange to me. You might get older, but that isn’t the Deontay Wilder I’m used to seeing.
“You’ve seen Malik working on the left, I think I saw him throw two check hooks, but he tried.
“The normal Deontay Wilder throws the punches - just throw those punches.”
