Devoted dad, bushy eyebrows and behind bars - The Life and Times of John Fury

There's just over a week to go until Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury meet at Riyadh Season's Reignited, live on DAZN Pay-Per-View, seven months on their first dance in the ring.

Then, it was The Cat who got the better of the Gypsy King, scoring a points victory to become undisputed heavyweight champion - but that was not the only attraction in the desert.

An altercation between Tyson's father John and members of Usyk's entourage boiled over into violence - and it not the first time the former has been at the centre of proceedings.

Ahead of December 21 and another massive date with destiny for both men, DAZN profiles John Fury - the man behind his son, and a major part of his rise to the top of the world.

Who is John Fury?

Born in the town of Tuam in Galway, Ireland in 1965, John Fury was initially raised in his home country before moving to Manchester with his family at the age of four.

A professional boxer in his own right for nearly a decade before the turn of the century, he has found further fame as the patriarch of the Fury family, a modern-day boxing dynasty.

Throughout his post-fighting career, Fury has served as a trainer, a mentor and a cornerman to his family, and frequently is ringside for their bouts on the biggest stages.

What was John Fury's professional record?

Compared to his sons, Fury's professional record was particularly anonymous, making his debut in 1987 and fighting for the following eight years until his last bout in 1995.

Across thirteen bouts, he delivered a 8-4-1 record, rebounding from a points loss in his first bout with Adam Fogerty to rack up six straight wins across small British venues.

He fought abroad once, in 1989 against David Hopkins in Helsinki, where he managed a draw, and fought for the Central Area heavyweight title against Neil Malpass in 1989.

What was John Fury's personal life?

The father of six children and of firm Irish Traveller heritage, Fury has led a particularly colourful life outside of the ring too, most notably when he was sentenced to prison in 2011.

He was found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after leaving his victim half-blind at a car auction, having attempted to gouge his eye out after a dispute.

Though handed an eleven-year sentence, Fury would only serve four and was released in February 2015, rejoining his family and continuing to serve as a mentor and trainer.

How has John Fury shaped his son?

Having named his son Tyson after legendary heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson, it seemed almost predestined that the elder Fury would guide his child into a career inside the ring.

Combined with his surname - reportedly derived Gaelic name Ó Fiodhabhra, meaning "bushy eyebrows" - he has been alongside the heavyweight star for many of his triumphs.

Fury's presence has sometimes served to distract, but there is little doubt that his methods and influence has turned his son into the fighter that he is today as he goes once more.
