In dispatching of Maciej Sulecki to remain undefeated Saturday night, Diego Pacheco protected his status as the No. 1 contender for the WBO super middleweight world title held by Canelo Alvarez.

But while the 23-year-old Pacheco waits for that mandatory championship shot, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has just the fight in mind for the South Central Los Angeles product to make in the interim.

"He's going to be the mandatory to the winner of Canelo Alvarez against Edgar Berlanga," Hearn told DAZN's Chris Mannix about Pacheco facing the victor of the September 14 fight between Alvarez and Berlanga.

"But we need another fight. We need a fight in between," he continued. "The fight I would love to make is Diego Pacheco against Jaime Munguia. I think that is a brilliant, brilliant fight."

Hearn added: "In Los Angeles, California, Diego Pacheco against Jaime Munguia is a massive fight. We go from here to the Staples Center, that sells out the Staples Center in double-quick time."

While having Pacheco (22-0, 18 knockouts) clash with Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) would be risky considering the latter is more seasoned of a pro, Hearn believes it'd be just the fight to properly prepare Pacheco for the Alvarez-Berlanga winner when he officially gets to cash in on that mandatory title shot.

"It's gonna happen, we gotta be ready when it happens and that kind of fight is going to prepare us to what destiny presents for Diego Pacheco," Hearn said, "which is bringing a world championship back to Los Angeles."
